The hero was reported missing from his base in central Helmand in the early hours of this morning.
British forces have launched a huge rescue mission to locate the soldier.
But Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf today claimed they were too late.
He said in a telephone call: "The soldier was captured yesterday evening during a firefight. "When the fighting got more intense we couldn't keep him so we had to kill him."
This could not be verified, and the Taliban often make exaggerated claims for propaganda purposes. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the missing soldier is British and his family have been informed.
ISAF said in a statement today: "An International Security Assistance Force service member has been listed as duty status whereabouts unknown in southern Afghanistan."
In June 2009 insurgents captured American soldier Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl in south-eastern Afghanistan.
They have since released videos showing him in captivity dressed in both Afghan clothing and in military uniform.
Defence Secretary Liam Fox today told MPs coalition forces were taking "all necessary and appropriate action" to find the serviceman.
